Singing Evaluations By Mail with Susan Anders I receive many emails from singers who don't have access to voice teachers and wonder if I can teach them long distance. The answer is both yes and no: There is a lot of visual work that happens during voice lessons. Teachers check their students for posture, tongue tension and placement, eyebrow scrunching, and much more. For that reason alone I don't think long-term comprehensive voice lessons can successfully be done via mail. However, there are many things a singer can learn from an evaluation of their recorded voice. I can give you an educated opinion about:
1) A cassette tape, CD or mp3 of you singing a song or two that demonstrates your singing ability. I'd prefer that you have some kind of accompaniment with your voice (like piano, guitar, real or karoake band, nothing that drowns out your voice). A cappella (without accompaniment) is okay, too. If you send me something you recorded in a professional studio I may not be able to give you an accurate assessment about certain things since vocals can be processed "in the mix". I'd prefer a dry, unedited vocal. 2) Print, fill out and enclose or email me the questionnaire at the bottom of this page. 3) A check or money order for $30, or you can pay with a secured credit card or Paypal online.
After listening to your tape, CD or mp3, I'll record a CD with my evaluation on it. This will include comments about your tone, pitch, delivery, etc. Depending on what I'm hearing I will either record some vocal exercises that I feel would address any problems I hear, or I'll troubleshoot actual phrases from your song. I'll record my voice in one speaker and any piano accompaniment I play in the other--that way if you want to sing the exercises without hearing my voice you just have to pan your speakers to one side. I'll spend at least half an hour both listening and making my comments. Then I'll send you the CD I've recorded. If you send me a CD of ten or more songs indicate a couple of songs for me to listen to. Usually I can do your evaluation within three weeks of receiving your recording and frequently in less than a week. Feel free to email me in advance if you need a more exact schedule.
